Miami landscape designer, Carlos Somoza, will present both natural and man-made building material alternatives including precast concrete pavers, local and imported stone, and tropical hardwood decking. Samples of materials will be available during class and a list of local building material suppliers will be provided to students. Have you ever thought about starting your own crop in your garden, or experimenting with a plant or two on your balcony? Join the Miami Beach Botanic Garden in their monthly landscape learning series for a seminar on growing bananas with Ian Maguire. Ian Maguire is a Homestead, Florida native and has a bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Florida International University. He and his family are the owners of Maguire's Farm, a one-acre banana farm in Homestead, FL established in 2008. Ian works full time as the biological scientist for Dr. Aaron Palmateer's Florida Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic located at the Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC). Ian's discussion on bananas will cover the basics of starting a small banana farm, description of cultivars (FHIA 1, 2, 18, 18 and Mysore), banana biology, marketing and challenges of growing this tasty crop in South Florida. During the seminar we will be passing around banana flavored munchies, as well as samples of banana beer! November 26 | Florida Native Plant Society Miami-Dade speaker: Dr. Aaron J. Palmateer organization: University of Florida Tropical Research and Education Center topics: Common diseases and disorders affecting plants in the South Florida landscape location: Pinecrest Gardens | 11000 Southwest 57th Avenue | Miami, FL 33156 time: 7:30pm – 9:30pm web: www.dade.fnpschapters.org This presentation will include both non-native and native plants used in the South Florida landscape that are affected with diseases or disorders. Dr. Palmateer has a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Auburn University, AL. He is an Associate Professor of Plant Pathology and director of the University of Florida’s Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic at the Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead, FL. Under his direction the diagnostic clinic has provided a valuable resource for which commercial plant producers, and landscape professionals have come to rely upon for accurate diagnoses of plant diseases and disorders. His areas of interest in his research include developing new diagnostic techniques, characterizing plant pathogens, and implementing effective management strategies for commercial producers and landscape professionals. He has published on a number of plant pathogen introductions and disease outbreaks affecting new plant hosts in the United States and the Caribbean.
