Beginning with an overview of the concepts origins and antecedents, including the professional formation and history of landscape architecture, the talk surveys canonical projects and recent work from North America. The talk features a detour into the implications of educating landscape architects to think and act as urbanists, including a reference to the reorientation of landscape pedagogy in the digital age, and concludes with examples of contemporary digital modeling in service of landscape urbanist practice. Charles Waldheim is the John E. Irving Professor of Landscape Architecture and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. His teaching and research examine the relationships between landscape and contemporary urbanism. Waldheim coined the term “landscape urbanism” to describe the recent emergence of landscape as a medium of urban order for the contemporary city. Waldheim has authored numerous articles and chapters on the topic, and edited The Landscape Urbanism Reader. Waldheim’s writing on landscape and contemporary urbanism has appeared in Landscape Journal, Topos, Log, Praxis, 306090, Canadian Architect, and Landscape Architecture Magazine. March 26 | Florida Native Plant Society Miami-Dade speaker: Roger Hammer topic: Florida Endemic Species location: Pinecrest Gardens 11000 Southwest 57th Avenue | Miami, FL 33156 time: 7:30pm – 9:30pm web: www.dade.fnpschapters.org This program will cover Florida's endemic species – plants that are found in Florida and nowhere else on Earth. Some of these species are locally common, while others are among the rarest plants in the state. Roger Hammer is a retired Miami-Dade County naturalist, author, photographer, and native plant aficionado. He is the author of Everglades Wildflowers, Florida Keys Wildflowers, A FalconGuide to Exploring Everglades National Park, Florida Icons: Fifty Classic Views of the Sunshine State and wildflower identification cards for different parts of Florida. He received the first Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award in 1982 from the Dade Chapter FNPS for "education, research, promotion, and preservation of native plants”; a Green Palmetto Award in Education from FNPS in 2003; a Lifetime Achievement Award from DCFNPS, Tropical Audubon Society and Miami Blue Chapter–North American Butterfly Association in 2011; and an Honorary Doctor of Science from FIU in 2012.
