This lecture series is in partnership with the Treasure Coast Section of the American Planning Association, FAU School of Urban and Regional Planning, Abacoa Property Owners’ Assembly, Inc., Palm Beach County Planning Congress, the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council & Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency.

About the speaker: Miami architect, Andrés Duany's work focuses on the planning of communities. He and his wife, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, founded their practice in 1980, at the time of their design of Seaside, which began an ongoing debate on the alternatives to suburban sprawl. Andrés has coauthored three widely distributed books, their most recent is The Smart Growth Manual which describes the problems of American cities and proposes techniques that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable.

Robert Petzinger, Fairchild Volunteer and Art Historian will discuss the works of Brazilian artists Hugo Franca and Roberto Burle Marx.  Hugo Franca designs huge organic-looking furniture from fallen trees from Brazil’s “Cerrado” region. Roberto Burle Marx is Brazil’s famous tropical landscape architect whom, prior to designing some of Latin America's most iconic gardens and cultural landscapes began his career as an abstract painter.  The evening will allow audience members to explore the lives, influences and selected works of these iconic Brazilian artists. Topics will include Lee Adams, Florida’s naturalist painter, who created original watercolor paintings of palms for Fairchild, and the Harvest the Wind  exhibit of works created by local artists from felled trees at the garden following Hurricane Andrew. After the talk, there will be a tram and walking tour to see the artworks.
 
Admission is free for Fairchild members and children 5 and younger.
Non-members: $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up and $12 for children 6–17

Are you bananas for bananas? Have  you ever  thought about starting your own crop in your garden, or experimenting with a  plant or two on  your balcony? Join the Miami Beach Botanic Garden in  their monthly landscape learning series for a seminar on growing  bananas with Ian Maguire. Ian Maguire is a  Homestead,  Florida native and has a  bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Florida International University. He and his  family are the owners of  Maguire's Farm,  a one-acre banana farm in Homestead,  FL established in  2008. Ian works full  time as the biological scientist for Dr.  Aaron  Palmateer's Florida Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic located at the  Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC). Ian's discussion on  bananas will  cover the basics of starting a small banana farm,  description of cultivars  (FHIA 1, 2, 18, 18 and Mysore), banana biology, marketing and challenges of  growing this tasty crop in South Florida.  During  the seminar we will be passing around banana flavored munchies, as well as  samples of banana beer!

The key to building beautiful gardens in South Florida relies heavily on choosing the right building materials for your application and applying common sense construction techniques to your
garden design.  Miami landscape designer, Carlos Somoza, will present both natural and man-made building material alternatives including precast concrete pavers, local and imported stone, and tropical hardwood decking. Samples of materials will be available during class and a list of local building material suppliers will be provided to students.
