Environmental artist, Xavier Cortada, speaks about his participatory eco-art project which he is implementing through the FIU College of Architecture, the Arts Office of Engaged Creativity and the FIU Office of Sustainability. Xavier Cortada created art at the Earth Poles to generate environmental at point in between: In 2007, the artist used the moving ice sheet beneath the South Pole as an instrument to mark time; the art piece will be completed in 150,000 years. In 2008, Cortada planted a green flag at North Pole to encourage reforestation in the world below.
Cortada, who was born in Albany, New York and grew up in Miami, holds degrees from the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Business and School of Law. Cortada serves as Artist-in-Residence and heads the Office of Engaged Creativity at Florida International University's (FIU) College of Architecture + The Arts (CARTA).

This year’s tour showcases gardens in Central Coral Gables, an area that is part of the original Town Plan developed in the 1920s. The 2013 Garden Tour will allow guests to explore different landscape designs, themes, and concepts at the properties selected within the heart of The City Beautiful. The Villagers’ goal is to educate, enlighten and hopefully inspire the amateur and the seasoned gardener alike, by offering multiple and varied alternatives that take a departure from the ordinary. You will be able to see such examples as an Edible Community Garden, a Low Maintenance Garden, a Native Habitat Garden and A Children’s Garden. A boutique with plants, garden art and other gift items for sale will be set up at Merrick House . Light refreshments will be served.
